Dear GiaoDiem:

I am a regular reader of www.giaodiem.com. Today I read a very interesting article from Bác Lê. I call Bác (Uncle) because I am a Vietnamese living in Australia, and younger than Bác Lê’s son.

With all respect, there are a couple of points I would like to feedback to Bác Lê’s article as follow. If possible can GiaoDiem help to put it in your website.

Thanks and Best Regards

“Nguyen Tuong Van’s family will visit him before his execution

         1.  …”At the end of 2002, Nguyen Tuong Van was arrested in Singapore at the Changi airport with 396 grams of heroin in his possession.” This information showed to me that both Van and Khoa joined the drug ring in Melbourne, Victoria in their twenties”

Reply: Bac Lê’ s conclusion - that the Nguyen brothers have “joined the drug ring” - is illogical and unsubstantial and can only be called a hypothesis at best. How can one draw this conclusion from the simple fact that Nguyen Tuong Van (NTV) carried a certain amount of heroin at the Changi airport??? Carrying drugs probably does not equate joining the drug ring. Clearly, NTV has committed a serious crime but there is no evidence to prove that NTV has “…joined the drug ring…in their twenties” This is really an unfair conclusion (even subjectively) for NTV who has passed away and has no chance to defend himself.

         2.   ”The Australian Prime Minister John Howard blamed the Singaporan Prime Minister for not informing him of the notification of execution date 12/2/05 as sent to Mrs. Kim Nguyen, forcing to make a futile appeal for cemency for the convict. Personally, I think the Australian Prime Minister has much to be blamed than the Singaporean Prime Minister because of his failure to curb drug traffic in Melbourne, a major metropolis of Australia”

Reply: With all respect, Uncle Lê has missed the point. The core issue is not which government is to be blamed but whether the death-sentence actually fits the crime (drug trafficking) according to Australian Government (versus Singaporean Government) values and beliefs. The Australian Government does not support the death sentence therefore it is the core argument for Australian Government to seek clemency in NTV’s case (NTV is an Australian with no previous criminal records). In addition, the Singaporean PM did apology to the Australian PM later that day for not informing Mr. Howard in Busan (Korea) of the Singaporean Government’s final decision on the verdict of NTV.

PS: I have personally never known Mr. NTV and his respected family.
